- : Is this a question of propriety or legality?
-
- Depends on the rules/regulations of the contest and the country from which
- you are operating. Here in the USA, you may legally operate from another
- ham's station and use your own callsign .... you then become responsible
- as the control operator. There are legal niceties involved, but suffice
- to say, it is both common and legal (in the USA) to do so. As an
- example, if you are an Extra class licensee and using a Novice station
- license you are required (as I recall) to stay within the privileges for
- that class of licensee. For contests, I have used either my own call at
- another's QTH, or on occasion I have used the other fellow's call but
- have been listed in the published contest results as the operator. Check
- CQ and QST and you will see lots of examples of this.
-
- In some other countries, you must use only your own call sign (eg. Japan)
- unless you are using a "club station" in order to stay within the rules
- and regulations of the licensing authority.

- I'm gonna follow WA3NNA's format; it's a good one.

- CALL: K5ZC
-
- ENTRY CLASS: 1A Commercial - club group
-
- SECTION / LOCATION: STX
- On Lake Livingston, about halfway between Livingston
- and Onalaska, Texas.
-
- RIG: ICOM IC-720, ICOM IC-740 (at different times)
-
- ANTENNA: 70' horizontal dipole, in the trees, tuned with an MFJ-941D Versa
- Tuner II.
-
- POWER SOURCE: Commercial mains.
-
- TOTAL ON-AIR OPERATION TIME: Approximately 5 hours
-
- FINAL SCORE:
- 1 QSO on 10
- 23 QSOs on 15
- 16 QSOs on 20
- 5 QSOs on 40
- 1 QSO on 75
- ----
- 46 TOTAL QSOs (x2) 100 watts = 88 points
-
- COMMENTS:
- The dipole didn't get out worth beans. It would tune up just fine, but
- if they weren't REALLY strong, we couldn't work them. We're primarily a CW
- group, but we only brought one keyer - and my Micromatic died before the start
- of the contest period. $#&%@^#$&%@$% We're not a really competitive group
- anyway, and that sealed it. Besides, we did get to spend a fair amount of time
- driving WD5IYT's boat around the lake... VE3SY's FD logger works reasonably
- well, though the user interface could use some work, and it didn't deal with
- DOS 6 (or, just now, OS/2) well at all - but, since it was written in 1989, I
- suppose I can excuse that.
-
- LESSONS LEARNED:
- Bring at least TWO CW sending devices; your favorite keyer may not
- survive the first test. (#$^%@#$^$%&*$^!!)
- Sunblock.
- Try trimming the dipole next time.
- Try real hard not to kick the water ski when falling out of it.

- COMMENTS :
- Conditions in general seemed better than for the last couple of years. 20
- was the workhorse band, but 40 CW was plenty active, and the wire beam helped
- there. Unlike last year there was a good amount of Sporadic E propagation on
- 10 and 6. Tried RS-10 for the first time, and finally got the hang of it
- by the last couple of passes in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Our highest
- score in 5 years, but consumed the least amount of beer ever. Is there
- a correlation? ;-)
-
- Big question in our minds: how did we fare against the "contest madmen"
- at W7FR, also 2A in WWA?
-
-
- LESSONS LEARNED:
-
- Use real rope to pull up heavy wire antennas. Nylon twine is
- strong enough, but it stretches too much and is too hard on the
- hands to really tighten up. Put up a better 15m or 20m antenna for
- our second station to use during the day. We were able to load up
- the 80 m dipole on 15, but it was hard being heard.

- michael - i also live in the la area and am a tech+ ... while i'd be happy
- to set up a sched with you and others, i think that you will find that if
- you call cq people out there will reply at your speed ... also, in most
- cases if you respond to a cq the person at the other end ofthe call will
- adjust to your speed. bear in mind that you will run into a few jerks, but
- they are really rare.
-
- if you are still interested in setting up a sched, let me know.
